AISI Statement on New Steel Investment in Iowa

September 28, 2026

Washington, D.C. –Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), issued the following statement regarding today’s White House announcement of a $15 billion investment in a new steelmaking facility in Iowa.

“President Trump’s Section 232 steel tariffs continue to energize the American iron and steel industry. AISI welcomes today’s announcement of another significant new investment in steelmaking in the United States. The sizeable investment by Mesabi Metallics in the new Iowa plant and also its Nashwauk, Minnesota, iron ore mine will further boost U.S. ironmaking and steelmaking capacity, create jobs and strengthen the U.S. economy. Importantly, the project will rely on an integrated U.S. supply chain for mining Minnesota iron ore and transforming it into steel in America. These investments highlight the importance of maintaining the Section 232 steel tariffs, which have created the level playing field that is essential to securing and building American manufacturing leadership.”
