Steel Industry Urges President to Stand Strong on Section 232 Tariffs

WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, the American steel industry thanked President Trump for his steadfast commitment to strengthening domestic steelmaking and urged the Administration to stand firm against any efforts to weaken the Section 232 tariffs on steel and steel derivative products.

The Steel Manufacturers Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the American Line Pipe Producers Association, the Specialty Steel Industry of North America, and the American Institute of Steel Construction sent a letter to President Trump emphasizing that the Section 232 steel tariffs have strengthened the domestic industry and positioned American steelmakers to compete for the long term. The letter warns that “weakening the tariffs now would put that progress at risk.”

A strong American steel industry is essential to our economic and national security. American steelmakers are delivering on the promise of Section 232 by investing billions of dollars, expanding domestic production and creating good-paying American jobs. Maintaining strong and predictable steel tariffs will provide the certainty our industry needs to keep investing, keep growing and keep making more steel in America.

The industry called on President Trump to not negotiate on the Section 232 steel tariffs as the Administration continues trade discussions with foreign partners.
