AISI Statement on Final Repeal of GHG Limits for U.S. Power Plants

Washington, D.C. –Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), issued the following statement regarding the announcement today by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) repealing the 2024 greenhouse gas emissions standards for power plants. 

“AISI commends EPA for taking this action, which will ensure that American steel producers continue to have access to reliable and affordable electric power. The GHG limits imposed on existing power plants by the previous administration were based on use of carbon capture and sequestration technology to achieve at least a 90 percent reduction in GHG emissions, which was not adequately demonstrated to be commercially available for widespread use in the power sector. The EPA’s decision today will enable the American steel industry to continue to lead the world in low emissions and energy efficient steel production.”
