August 24, 2024Driven by government subsidies and other trade-distorting policies, crude steel production in China last year exceeded 1 billion metric tons for the fourth year in a row despite slowing domestic demand for steel in that country. As a result, Chinese steel exports grew by 38% in 2023 and by an additional 24% in the first half of 2024.
