AISI Announces 2020 Institute Medal Winners

Washington, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today announced the recipients of its highest technical award – the 2020 Institute Medal – to Naiyang Ma, Joseph Houser and Marcelo Andrade of ArcelorMittal USA R&D; and, Billi McDowell and Dale Heinz of ArcelorMittal USA Burns Harbor, for their paper: “Separation of Mill Scale from Flume Wastewater Using a Dynamic Separator Toward Zero Wastes in the Steel Hot-Rolling Process.”

Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.

“I am honored to congratulate this year’s Institute Medal winners and finalists on their remarkable achievements,” said John Brett, president and CEO of ArcelorMittal USA and chairman of AISI. “We thank them for their outstanding efforts in ensuring that the North American steel industry remains among the most innovative and efficient in the world.”

Finalist medals were also awarded to:

  • Rui Liu, Hongbin Yin, Bruce Forman and Rudolf Moravec of ArcelorMittal USA and, Ran Zhou of Purdue University Northwest, for their paper: “Numerical and Experimental Studies on Fluid Flow and Microbubble Entrapment During Continuous Casting With a Curved Mold Design.”
  • Yufeng Wang, Sunday Abraham, Rick Bodnar, Randy Petty, Gary Brown, Preston Schaaf and Myrissa Maxfield, all of SSAB Americas, for their paper: “An Optimization Model for Making Alloy Additions During Steelmaking at SSAB Iowa.”
