AISI Comments on Favorable Court Decision on Hard Rock Mining
July 19, 2019WASHINGTON, DC – In response to today’s ruling by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the EPA’s decision not to impose financial assurance requirements on hard rock mining companies, Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), an intervenor in the suit, issued the following statement:
“We are very pleased that the Court has agreed with us that EPA is correct in determining that no financial assurance for the hard rock mining sector is necessary for Superfund cleanups. Substantive existing federal and state requirements are already in place that fully cover this sector and protect the public and environment. Enacting additional requirements would be duplicative and redundant. We commend the Court for this ruling.”
