Steel Bumper Systems
Steel Bumper Systems for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks
Automotive bumper system design continues to undergo significant changes due to enhanced global safety standards, an increased focus on vehicle electrification, continued emphasis on vehicle weight reduction and the introduction of higher strength material grades.
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Bumper team is a coordinated membership consisting of North American steel producers, bumper manufacturers, and representatives of the OEM community dedicated to keeping steel as the material of choice for bumper applications. This is accomplished by sharing information related to performance requirements, steel material grades, manufacturing processes, and solving challenges associated with bumper system development. The Bumper Project Team also works on research and development projects related to new high-strength and ultra high-strength steels to address new design challenges and reduce cost and weight.
