AISI Announces 2024 Institute Medal Awardees
May 14, 2024WASHINGTON, D.C. –The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today presented its highest technical award – the 2024 Institute Medal – to Narayan S. Pottore and Hong Zhu of ArcelorMittal Global R&D Laboratories and Jiyun Kang and C. Cem Tasan of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The honor was in recognition of their paper: “An In Situ Investigation of Neighborhood Effects in a Ferrite-Containing Quenching and Partitioning Steel: Mechanical Stability, Strain Partitioning, and Damage.” The award was presented by Lourenco Goncalves, AISI Chairman and the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., during AISI’s 2024 General Meeting in Washington, D.C.
“The steel industry is constantly innovating and improving through its commitment to advanced research and development initiatives. The landmark research by these award winners will further the technological superiority of the United States, ensuring that the industry continues to provide outstanding products for steel-reliant sectors. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s Institute Medal recipients,” Goncalves said.
Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to the future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.
Finalist medals were also awarded to:
- Jianghua Li, Mark Suer, Jeff Haeberle, Ryan Bowser, Jason Fehr, Brian Dehaut and Misty Erford, all of Cleveland-Cliffs, for their collaborative paper titled “Use of HBI in Cleveland-Cliffs EAF and AOD Operations.”
- Dengqui Bai and Yufeng Wang of SSAB Americas, and Ian Robinson and John Hinton of Primetals Technologies, for their paper titled “Development of a Digital Twin for the MULPIC® at SSAB Mobile Plate-Steckel Rolling Mill.”
