AISI Announces 2022 Institute Medal Awardees
May 25, 2022Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) presented its highest technical award – the 2022 Institute Medal – to Gang Huang of ArcelorMittal and his research partners Adam D. Hodges, Lindsay Brown, Sarah Tedesco and Shane Anderson of General Motors LLC, for their paper: “Strain Amount and Strain Path Effects on Instrumented Charpy Toughness of Baked Third Generation Advanced High Strength Steels.” The award was presented by Leon Topalian, AISI Chairman and president and CEO of Nucor, during AISI’s 2022 General Meeting in Washington, D.C., held jointly with the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA).
“I would like to congratulate this year’s Institute Medal winners and finalists on their remarkable achievements,” said Topalian. “We thank them for their efforts to promote and further steel industry innovation that will expand our industry’s capabilities to meet the needs of our customers for advanced steel solutions.”
Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to the future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.
Finalist medals were also awarded to:
- Dengqi Bai of SSAB Americas R&D, Chase Rawlinson of SSAB Alabama Inc., Kenneth Hodges formerly of SSAB Alabama and now of Enviva Biomass, and Ian Robinson of Primetals Technology Ltd., for their paper titled: “Production of X70 Discrete Plate Using MULPIC.”
- Dongwei Fan of ArcelorMittal Global R&D; and Ankit Srivastava, Yu Liu and Raymundo Arróyave of Texas A&M University, for their collaborative paper titled “Microstructure-Based Modeling of the Effect of Inclusion on the Bendability of Advanced High Strength Dual-Phase Steels.”
