Steel Imports Up 11.0% In October vs. September

Finished Import Market Share YTD at 19%

Washington, D.C. – Based on final Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 1,730,000 net tons (NT) of steel in October 2025, including 1,335,000 net tons (NT) of finished steel (up 11.0% and 12.9%, respectively, vs. September 2025). Total and finished steel imports are down 10.7% and 14.0%, respectively, year-to-date vs. 2024. Over the 12-month period November 2024 to October 2025, total and finished steel imports are down 8.9% and 10.7%, respectively, vs. the prior 12-month period. Finished steel import market share was an estimated 16% in October and is estimated at 19% over the first ten months of 2025.

Key steel products with a significant import increase in October compared to September are wire rods (up 105%), reinforcing bars (up 68%), sheets and strip all other metallic coated (up 45%), hot rolled sheets (up 28%) and oil country goods (up 22%). Products with a significant increase in imports over the 12-month period November 2024 to October 2025 compared to the previous 12-month period include tin plate (up 39%), line pipe (up 17%), oil country goods (up 17%) and wire rods (up 15%).

In October, the largest suppliers were Canada (311,000 NT, unchanged vs. September), Brazil (294,000 NT, up 68%), Mexico (154,000 NT, up 6%), South Korea (128,000 NT, down 47%) and Taiwan (96,000 NT, up 139%). Over the 12-month period November 2024 to October 2025, the largest suppliers were Canada (5,029,000 NT, down 24% vs, compared to the previous 12-months), Brazil (4,041,000 NT, down 16%), Mexico (3,129,000 NT, down 9%), South Korea (2,718,000 NT, down 4%) and Taiwan (1,153,000 NT, up 27%).
