AISI Announces 2025 Institute Medal Winners

WASHINGTON, D.C. –The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today presented its highest technical award – the 2025 Institute Medal – to Sirisha Parvathaneni and Marcelo W. Andrade of ArcelorMittal Global R&D Laboratories. The honor was in recognition of their paper: “CFD Modeling of the Industrial-Scale Bottom-Fired Direct Reduced Iron Reforming Process.” The award was presented by Lourenco Goncalves, AISI Chairman and the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc., during AISI’s 2025 General Meeting in Washington, D.C.  

“The American steel industry stands as a beacon of innovation. This year’s Institute Medal recipients are pioneers whose groundbreaking efforts will enhance the industry’s technological edge for decades, ensuring we continue to provide exceptional, cutting-edge products to our customers. I extend my congratulations to this year’s remarkable Institute Medal recipients,” Goncalves said. 

Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to the future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members. 

Finalist Medals were also awarded to: 

  • Jiahao Cheng and Xiaohua Hu from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Narayan S. Pottore, Brian Lin, Sriram Sadagopan and Hong Zhu from ArcelorMittal Global R&D Laboratories, for their collaborative paper titled “A Mesoscale Crystal Plasticity Model to Predict Room-Temperature Deformation and Martensitic Transformation of High Strength Quenching and Partitioning (Q&P) Steels and Validation with Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction.”
