AISI Applauds Re-Introduction of Bill to Combat Trade Crimes
March 6, 2025WASHINGTON, DC- The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today applauded the introduction of the “Protecting American Industry and Labor from International Trade Crimes Act.” The bill, introduced by Reps. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), along with the Chairman of the Select Committee on China John Moolenaar (R-MI), would establish a task force or similar structure within the Department of Justice specifically dedicated to prosecuting trade crimes.
Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of AISI, issued a statement in support of the bill. “Full enforcement of both the criminal and civil aspects of U.S. customs and trade laws is of critical importance to the American steel industry and our workers. For too long, China has circumvented U.S. trade laws by way of fraud, transshipment and duty evasion. These actions have harmed American businesses, including the steel industry. By establishing a task force within the Department of Justice, this bill will help ensure that criminal activities to evade U.S. customs and trade laws are appropriately addressed by federal prosecutors. AISI applauds the work of Representatives Hinson and Krishnamoorthi, and Chairman Moolenaar, to develop this important legislation to ensure vigorous enforcement of U.S. customs and trade laws and, where appropriate, prosecution of criminal violations of these laws,” Dempsey said.
