AISI President and CEO Quoted in Politico Morning Trade
October 10, 2024American Iron and Steel Institute President Kevin Dempsey praised the USMCA’s recent expansion of the rules to grant tariff-free status to steel only if the metal is completely melted and poured in a USMCA country. The rule will go into effect in 2027.
“Although this requirement has not yet come into force, domestic steelmakers report they believe this future rule is already having an impact, and they expect this requirement could also drive increased sourcing from the region in the future,” Dempsey said.
