AISI Announces 2023 Institute Medal Awardees

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) presented its highest technical award – the 2023 Institute Medal – to Garrett Angus, Jerry Schoen, Chris Jones and Grant Thomas of Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., for their paper: “Si-Cr-Al-Mn Alloys for High Specific Resistivity and Application to Grain Oriented and Non-Grain-Oriented Electrical Steels.” The award was presented by Lourenco Goncalves, AISI chairman and chairman, president and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs, during AISI’s 2023 General Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“I would like to congratulate this year’s Institute Medal winners and finalists on their remarkable accomplishments,” said Goncalves. “I am inspired by their innovative solutions that will strengthen the steel industry for the future and continue to provide excellent products for our customers.”

Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to the future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.

Finalist medals were also awarded to:

  • Anirban Chakraborty of ArcelorMittal; Hassan Ghassemi-Armaki of General Motors R&D Manufacturing Systems Research Laboratory; and, Robert E. Maaß, Yuki Ikeda, Renliang Yuan, and Jian Min Zuo of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for their collaborative paper titled “Early Stages of Liquid-Metal Embrittlement in an Advanced High-Strength Steel.”

  • Nicolas Legrand of ArcelorMittal and Rajat Bathla of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. for their paper titled “Turn Up and Turn Down Analysis at Roughing Mill Vertical Scalebreaker.”
