AISI Applauds House Passage Of Water Resources Bill
December 8, 2022WASHINGTON, D.C. – American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) President and CEO Kevin Dempsey today applauded passage by the House of Representatives of legislation to make key investments in critical U.S. Army Corps of Engineers water infrastructure projects, including the construction and maintenance of ports, inland waterways, locks and dams across the U.S. The measure called the Water Resources Development Act of 2022 (WRDA), passed as part of the FY 2023 National Defense Authorization Act. AISI yesterday sent a letter to all members of the House urging passage of the water resources bill.
“AISI member companies rely heavily on seaports and inland waterways for transporting raw materials to their mills for manufacturing steel products. The national water resources infrastructure system is also key for steel companies to move finished steel products to their customers and to end users in the market,” Dempsey said. “In addition to authorizing 25 new water projects, the bill is critical to the ongoing modernization of the Soo Locks in Michigan — through which nearly all of the iron ore used for American steel production is shipped. This and many other provisions of the bill are significant to the timely construction of important water infrastructure projects which are critical to the steel industry and our customers. We urge the Senate to pass this measure as soon as possible.”
