AISI Announces 2021 Institute Medal Awardees

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) presented its highest technical award – the 2021 Institute Medal – to Md Shamsujjoha of ArcelorMittal R&D for his paper “Evolution of Microstructures, Dislocation Density and Arrangement During Deformation of Low Carbon Lath Martensitic Steels.”

The award was presented by Leon Topalian, AISI Chairman and president and CEO of Nucor during AISI’s 2021 General Meeting in Washington, D.C., held jointly with the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA).

“I am honored to congratulate this year’s Institute Medal winners and finalists on their remarkable achievements,” said Topalian. “We thank them for their unrelenting efforts to promote and further steel industry innovation – ensuring that the American steel industry remains among the most competitive and efficient in the world.”

Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.

Finalist medals were also awarded to:

  • Hassan Ghassemi-Armaki from ArcelorMittal Global R&D, Ankit Srivastava from Texas A&M University and Xinzhu Zheng, also from Texas A&M, who collaborated to write their paper titled “Structural and Microstructural Influence on Deformation and Fracture of Dual-Phase Steels.”
  • Sunday Abraham, Rick Bodnar, Gary Brown, Miles Haberkorn, Wesley Nicholson, Yufeng Wang, Randy Petty, Tony Franks, Timothy Sprague and Wesley Woods, all from SSAB Americas, for their paper titled “Slag Engineering for Phosphorus Removal in the EAF and Sulfur Removal in the Ladle.”
