Schmitt, the Institute’s immediate past chairman, was recognized with the award during AISI’s 124th General Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In presenting the award, John Ferriola, incoming AISI chairman and chairman, president and CEO of Nucor, said, “On behalf of the Institute, I’m honored to present this distinguished Gary Memorial Medal to Chuck. Chuck has been an outspoken leader in his year at the helm of AISI. He has helped raise the profile on trade, energy, and keeping steel the backbone of the manufacturing sector. He is tremendously deserving of this award, and of the gratitude of all of us in the industry.”
The medal’s inscription reads: “For his outstanding leadership in representing the critical public policy interests of the Institute and American manufacturing in a period of tremendous challenge; [and] for his unwavering commitment of time and energy to matters that will impact the future of the North American steel industry, the Institute and the people we support and serve to keep our vital industry strong.”
