Strain Rate Effect Paper for Martensitic Transformation Wins 2020 SAE/AISI Sydney H. Melbourne Award

SOUTHFIELD, MI – Five individuals representing an automaker and academia received the SAE/American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Sydney H. Melbourne Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Automotive Steel Sheet.

This year’s award winners included: C. Matthew Enloe, Ph.D., Senior Manager Market Development at CBMM, Whitney Poling, Ph.D., Senior Researcher, Global R & D – Additive Manufacturing Research, Vesna Savic, Ph.D., Materials Technology, and Louis G. Hector, Jr., Ph.D., Materials Science, Metallurgy, Manufacturing, from General Motors Company and Rakan Alturk, Mechanical Engineering, at the time a Graduate Student from Clemson University for SAE Paper #2019-01-0521, “Strain Rate Effect on Martensitic Transformation in a TRIP Steel Containing Carbide-Free Bainite.”

“The Sydney Melbourne award acknowledges excellence in the advancement of sheet steel,” said John Catterall, vice president, automotive program for AISI. “We are very pleased with the selection of this year’s winners because understanding the effects of strain rate on austenite to martensite transformation is key to determining the energy absorption capabilities of 3rd Gen AHSS in high speed impact events.”

Established in 1997 to honor the accomplishments of the late Sydney H. Melbourne of Dofasco Inc., the award recognizes steel and automotive industry employees who strive for the level of excellence Melbourne attained with his organization. The award acknowledges an author whose paper effectively demonstrates ways to further the use of sheet steel in automotive applications. The paper must be well organized, written in a succinct manner and possess excellent technical merit. It should also foster long-term benefits to sheet steel industry professionals worldwide.

The award was presented by SAE International, a U.S.-based global association of nearly 200,000 engineers, technical experts and volunteers in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries, and is sponsored in conjunction with AISI.
