Washington, D.C. – Based on final Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 2,271,000 net tons (NT) of steel in March 2019, including 1,861,000 net tons (NT) of finished steel (down 6.6% and up 6.7%, respectively, vs. February final data). Through the first three months of 2019, total and finished steel imports are 8,184,000 and 6,056,000 net tons (NT), down 5.9% and 11.4%, respectively, vs. the same period in 2018. Annualized total and finished steel imports in 2019 would be 32.7 and 24.2 million NT, down 2.9% and 5.7%, respectively, vs. 2018. Finished steel import market share was an estimated 19% in March and is estimated at 21% over the first three months of 2019.
