Preliminary Steel Imports Increase 25% in March; Finished Import Market Share YTD at 25%

Washington, D.C. – Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that the U.S. imported a total of 3,396,000 net tons (NT) of steel in March 2017, including 2,517,000 net tons (NT) of finished steel (up 24.8% and 21.0%, respectively, vs. February final data). Year-to-date (YTD) through three months of 2017, total and finished steel imports are 8,933,000 and 6,927,000 net tons (NT), up 18.7% and 7.8%, respectively, vs. the same period in 2016. Annualized total and finished steel imports in 2017 would be 35.7 and 27.7 million NT, up 8.2% and 5.2%, respectively, vs. 2016. Finished steel import market share was an estimated 26% in March and is estimated at 25% YTD.
