Research Proposal Solicitation

The American Iron and Steel Institute is soliciting research proposals. Proposals will be accepted from North American organizations including industry, universities, government and private laboratories, and combinations thereof.

This solicitation is based on the technological needs of the industry identified by AISI’s Committee on Manufacturing and Technology. Proposals addressing the need identified below will be considered.

Advanced Measurement Technology
The Steel industry has a need for sensors which can measure various parameters throughout the steelmaking process. To date, these measurements have not been possible due to the extreme temperatures and conditions experienced. The industry has a need for these sensors to provide for more accurate modeling, real-time sensing, and overall quality improvements. Some of the measurement devices needed would provide the ability to measure oxygen in liquid metal, slag depth, liquid metal temperature, rolling mill temperatures, pickle bath chemistry, acidity, and copper levels, cold rolling stand load and separating force. In addition to the sensors, there is also a need for big data analysis. A system is necessary to analyze and compile the data from the sensors in order to make it readable and useable to predict issues.

Additional information regarding the conditions present at the steelmaking process for each type of sensor is listed below.

Oxygen in liquid metal

Rolling Mill Temperatures
Typ. Temperature ~ 985 - 2210°F
Steel Width ~ 15 - 128 inches
Steel Thickness ~ 0.04 – 16 inches
Steel Speed ~ 800 – 3000 ft/min

Cold Rolling Stand Load
Typ. Temperature ~ 80°F
Typ. Separating force ~ 5000 tons

Steel slag is produced during the separation of the molten steel from impurities in the steelmaking process. The slag occurs as a molten liquid melt and floats to the top of the molten steel. Slag is a complex solution of silicates and oxides and the typical components are limestone, silica, alumina, magnesium oxide, iron oxide, magnesium oxide, and sulfur.

Proposals will be accepted until April 26, 2017. Please follow the below instructions for Submitting Proposals carefully and include the Proposal Summary Page. All questions should be emailed to MSortwell@steel.org.

Instructions for Submitting Proposals to AISI
Proposals should be no longer than 10 pages (plus summary sheet).

Proposal must contain the following sections:

  • Proposal Summary Page
  • Executive Summary which defines the proposed project, states why it is needed or appropriate and how its success will be measured.
  • Description of the technical hurdles to be overcome to reach commercial viability.
  • Description of the plan for overcoming technical hurdles.
  • Explanation of expected benefits in steelmaking (quantified manufacturing and/or energy cost savings and/or increased product value, environmental benefit – e.g., CO2 reduction).
  • Project schedule including list of anticipated project tasks/milestones for each project year.
  • Estimated project cost by year, broken down by labor and equipment for each participating organization. Indicate if any, the percentage of total cost contributed by the proposer(s).

Do not include proprietary information in proposals as they will be submitted to AISI members for cost sharing or for federal funding after selection by AISI. Proprietary information can be discussed later under a non-disclosure agreement.
