This Week's Raw Steel Production

In the week ending October 11, 2008, domestic raw steel production was 1,869,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 78.3 percent. Production was 2,112,000 tons in the week ending October 11, 2007, while the capability utilization then was 88.5 percent. The current week production represents an 11.5 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending October 11, 2008 is down 3.8 percent from the previous week ending October 4, 2008 when production was 1,942,000 tons and the rate of capability utilization was 81.4 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through October 11, 2008 was 85,417,000 tons, at a capability utilization rate of 87.9 percent. That is a 1.6 percent increase from the 84,124,000 tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 86.4 percent.

Broken down by districts, here's production for the week ending October 11, 2008 in thousands of net tons: Northeast Coast: 154; Pittsburgh/Youngstown: 172; Lake Erie: 96; Detroit: 75; Indiana/Chicago: 472; Midwest: 241; Southern: 579 and Western: 80.
