2007 General Meeting Highlights China Impact, Climate
Change Issues
On
May 6-8, AISI held its 115th General Meeting in Henderson,
Nev. in conjunction with the Metals Service Center Institute
(MSCI). The meeting provided an opportunity for steel
producers and service centers to strengthen relationships,
share ideas and work together to improve the competitiveness
of North American manufacturing. Its theme, "In
Front of the CurveDoing
it Right," was carried throughout discussions of
what the North American steel industry is doing to combat
key issues facing the industry.

The
NAFTA paper, "Environmental Aspects of
Global Trade in Steel: The North American Steel
Industry Perspective," highlights the fact
that countries such as China have lower GHG
emissions standards than what are currently
in place in North America.

Steel Industry Urges OECD Support for Development of
International Database for GHG Emissions
This
month, AISI, the Steel Manufacturer's Association (SMA),
the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA),
the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) and
La Camara Nacional de la Industria del Hierro y del
Acero (CANACERO) compiled a joint paper on their support
for the development of an international database for
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Blast Furnace Modeling Project Selected for Funding
AISI's
collaborative research project with Purdue UniversityCalumet
to "Minimize Blast Furnace Fuel Rates by Optimizing
Burden and Gas Distributions" has been selected
for co-funding by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

2006 Annual Statistical Report Available for Purchase
AISI
has released its 2006 Annual Statistical Report (ASR),
which provides statistical data for the United States
steel industry plus a variety of selected statistical
data on the Canadian, Mexican and world steel industries.
The 130-page book is the most comprehensive reference
of its kind for the American steel industry.

The

Mittal's Louis Schorsch Awarded 2007 Gary Memorial Medal
at AISI General Meeting
AISI
recently announced that Louis Schorsch is the 2007 recipient
of the Gary Memorial Medal. Schorsch, former AISI chairman,
and CEO, flat products, Americas, Arcelor Mittal, was
honored at the AISI General Meeting in Henderson, Nev.
held May 6-8, 2007.
