Representative John P. Murtha (D-PA), a decorated war veteran and a beloved and revered founding member of the Congressional Steel Caucus passed away February 8, 2010. The Chairman of AISI and steel industry leaders nationwide expressed sorrow over the death of Murtha.

AISI Board Approves 2010 Public Policy Agenda
The AISI Board of Directors approved the Institute’s 2010 public policy agenda on February 10, which identifies top priorities to be a pro-manufacturing strategy, international trade, climate change and energy, transportation and infrastructure and occupational health and safety.

AISI Files Legal Challenge to EPA Regulation of Greenhouse Gases
On February 16, AISI filed a legal challenge to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent ruling that will result in greenhouse gas emissions being regulated under the Clean Air Act. The AISI filing is a petition for review with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. It challenges the so-called “Endangerment Finding,” which EPA is using as the basis for its proposed regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

David C. Jeanes, President of AISI Business Unit, Set to Retire
David Jeanes will retire as president of Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) on March 1. The SMDI, which was created as a business unit of AISI in 2008, had long served the steel industry in the form of AISI’s steel market development programs. Jeanes led the market development efforts over the past two decades that resulted in AISI’s recognition for having a dynamic and innovative model for making steel the material of choice.

AISI Appoints Kavanagh President of Steel Market Development Institute
AISI has appointed Lawrence W. Kavanagh as the president of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of the Institute. Currently AISI Vice President of Environment and Technology, Kavanagh will assume his new responsibilities on March 1.
