Papers Presented at the 5th International Congress on Science and Technology of Ironmaking

AISI was invited by the Chinese Society of Metals to present a paper on “Opportunities for Low CO2 Ironmaking in the USA” during the 5th International Congress on the Science and Technology of Ironmaking held October 19-23, 2009 in Shanghai, China.

B. V. Lakshminarayana presented the paper in the Society’s plenary session on October 20, 2009. His presentation focused on the possible scenarios of adopting various technologies in next decades leading to 2050. He also outlined two of the active CO2 Breakthrough technologies being pursued in the U.S., which were well received.

A separate presentation by Prof. H.Y. Sohn of University of Utah on our Hydrogen Flash Smelting project generated much interest and discussions. Prof. Wei Kao Lu of McMaster University and Prof. Chen Zhou of Purdue University presented papers on the AISI research being conducted on Paired Straight Hearth Furnace and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model for Blast Furnace Energy Use.

The papers showcased the trend of research in the North American steel industry and highlighted the leading role our highly focused research plays in the international steel industry. These research projects are all supported by AISI producer and associate members and in some cases, the U.S. Department of Energy. For more information, contact BV Lakshminarayana.
