Eighth Annual Great Designs in Steel Seminar Showcases Steel’s Solution to Increasing Fuel Economy and Reducing EmissionsTo demonstrate how new advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) technologies provide cost-effective solutions to help automakers increase fuel economy, curb emissions and improve safety, the Automotive Applications Council of AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) held its 8th Annual Great Designs in Steel seminar on May 14 at the Laurel Manor Conference Center in Livonia, Mich. More than 1,000 automotive engineers, automotive designers, Tier One and Tier Two suppliers and academia attended.

AISI 2009 General Meeting Highlights “Global Challenges – Global Solutions”On May 3-5, AISI held its 117th General Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. in conjunction with the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI). This was our sixth year meeting with MSCI – with combined attendance totaling just over 300. The audience was comprised of senior executives from the metals industry, both producers and service centers, as well as invited guests from allied organizations, private industry, the government and media.

American Clean Energy and Security Act Passes in the House Energy and Commerce CommitteeAfter more than 40 hours of debate last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act by a vote of 33-25. All of the Democrats with the exception of Reps. Ross (AR), Matheson (UT), Melancon (LA) and Barrow (GA) voted for the bill, while all of the Republicans except Congresswoman Bono Mack (CA) voted against it.

Ward J. “Tim” Timken, Jr. Awarded 2009 Gary Memorial Medal at AISI General MeetingWard J. “Tim” Timken, Jr. is the 2009 recipient of the Gary Memorial Medal, the highest honor given to an individual by the North American steel industry. Timken, chairman of The Timken Company, was honored at the AISI General Meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. on May 5, 2009.
