AISI Issues Legislative Action Alert for Currency Reform and Fair Trade Act of 2009In conjunction with the May 14 SteelGram regarding the Currency Reform and Fair Trade Act (CRFTA) of 2009, AISI issued a Legislative Action Alert to allow others to voice their support for the bill and encourage their representatives in Washington to help American manufacturers and their workers fight back against those nations who misalign their currency. Domestic manufacturing and their workers can compete with anyone in the world on a level playing field, but cannot compete against governments that engage in fundamental currency misalignment. The bill, if enacted, would establish an effective trade remedy provision to neutralize prolonged currency undervaluation. AISI President Thomas J. Gibson Submits Testimony to House Committee on Energy and CommercePrior to passing the bill out of committee on May 22, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce received testimony from AISI President Thomas J. Gibson regarding the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The testimony detailed the domestic industry’s voluntary reductions and unique situation as both an energy-intensive and trade-exposed industry, Gibson advocated for “fair climate laws with global reach that can be enforced.” Gibson also warned that “any legislation that undermines the competitiveness of U.S. mills will encourage steel production to leave this market in favor of markets with lower environmental standards” which “will result in higher volumes of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.” To read the full story on the Act’s passage in the Committee, click here.
