The North American steel industry is actively investing in research and development on new transformational processes for making steel that will dramatically reduce or eliminate CO2. This exciting R&D effort is called the AISI CO2 Breakthrough program. Two projects we are currently funding through the Breakthrough program are: Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) and Hydrogen Flash Smelting.
But this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Rewind to 1995 and an important milestone in R&D: the U.S. steel industry reached consensus on broad goals for the future and published its vision for collaborative R&D. The vision, called, Steel: A National Resource for the Future, provided the foundation for two important R&D programs:
-
The Technology Roadmap Program is a public private partnership between AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Industrial Technology. This joint DOE/AISI collaborative program is designed to: 1) Increase energy efficiency, 2) increase the competitiveness of the North American steel industry, and 3) improve the environment.
-
Advanced Process Control is an ambitious, five-year collaborative research program aimed at keeping North American steelmakers on the leading edge of world steelmaking technology. Launched in April 1993.
