WASHINGTON, DC – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today presented Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) the “2016 Congressional Steel Champion Award” for his dedication to the American steel industry and its workers. Wyden received the award in recognition of his long-standing support of the steel industry, his leadership in helping secure passage of legislation to improve the antidumping and countervailing duty laws during the debate on Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) last summer and his leadership in obtaining passage of the ENFORCE Act as part of the customs bill enacted into law earlier this year. The award was presented to the Senator today by Conrad Winkler, a member of the AISI Board of Directors and President and CEO of EVRAZ North America, which has facilities in Oregon.

Sen. Wyden said “My number one goal, when it comes to the cutthroat global economy, is to fight for American workers. One way you do that is by enforcing the rules here at home and stopping trade cheats before they hurt American workers and families. I helped pass new laws to fight unfair trade because I believe American workers deserve stronger and faster relief. And I passed the ENFORCE Act to give the U.S. another powerful tool for standing up for good-paying red, white and blue jobs. I’m grateful to America’s steel industry for helping push these groundbreaking trade enforcement bills across the finish line.”

Winkler said, “Trade legislation that was signed into law last summer will improve the effectiveness of our trade laws for the first time in 20 years, and the ENFORCE Act signed earlier this year will improve trade enforcement by cracking down on duty evasion at our borders. Sen. Ron Wyden was at the forefront in passing both of these laws, which came at a crucial time for the steel industry. We are grateful for his strong leadership on this, and so many other issues that impact the American steel industry and our employees in Oregon. Sen. Wyden is truly one of our steel champions.”

Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of AISI, said, “In his leadership role on trade issues in Congress, Senator Wyden is in a unique position to support the men and women of the American steel industry – and he has. Sen. Wyden has worked tirelessly to combat the foreign trade distorting practices that injure the U.S. steel industry and our workers. We are grateful for his strong advocacy to address the unfair foreign trading practices that have caused a crisis in the steel industry, and are honored to present Sen. Wyden with this much-deserved award.”
