STEELTON, PA –The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) today presented Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) a “2015 Congressional Steel Champion Award” for his dedication to the American steel industry and its workers.

AISI president and CEO Thomas J. Gibson was joined by General Manager of ArcelorMittal Steelton, Steve Taylor, in presenting the award during the congressman’s visit to the Steelton facility today where he toured the mill and met with many of the more than 650 employees. Barletta received the award in recognition of his strong support of the steel industry, including recent efforts that resulted in the enactment of legislation to improve antidumping and countervailing duty laws, and his leadership on the ENFORCE Act to improve the process to ensure the laws against unfair trade are strictly enforced.

Rep. Barletta said, “This award means a great deal to me, as I have always made it a priority to stand up for the steel industry and the thousands of Pennsylvanians it employs. The United States that we know today was built with Pennsylvania steel, which helped launch America into its rightful position as a world industrial leader. When Congress considers any legislation that deals with international trade, we must always ask ourselves how it will improve our competitive position in the world. Whenever I have a vote before me in the House, I am always thinking, ‘How will this affect our workers back home?’ Leveling the playing field is always the right decision.”

“This is a challenging time for the steel industry,” said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of AISI in presenting the award. “The surge of foreign imports that continue to come into this nation unfairly, and at record levels, puts our economic health at risk. Congressman Barletta has fought to pass trade law improvements that will help us work toward leveling the playing field on trade. We are grateful for his leadership on this, and so many other issues that impact the American steel industry and the 20,000 steel industry workers in Pennsylvania.”

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 19 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 125 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
