CHICAGO – The Board of Directors of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has elected Chuck Schmitt, president of SSAB Americas, to serve as chairman of the Institute until May 2016.

“Chuck is a strong and passionate advocate for policies that will help move our industry forward. His energy and commitment to advocacy will help us affect needed policy changes in this challenging economic environment,” said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of AISI. “I know Chuck will be a dynamic and effective leader for our work to combat unfair trade practices, enhance the competitiveness of the North American steel industry and steadfastly promote steel as the material of choice. We are all looking forward to working with him in his role as chairman.”

The election took place today at the AISI Board Meeting as part of the Institute’s 123rd General Meeting being held this week at the Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park in Chicago.

“I am proud to help lead policy and market-related activities at AISI as chairman,” said Schmitt. “I am honored that my colleagues on the Board have instilled their trust and confidence in me, as we work together to turn obstacles into opportunities. While we’ve made measureable strides as an industry since the recession, we still have work to do. I know with our dedicated company employees, and the leadership and outstanding reputation of AISI, we can continue to strengthen steel’s role in the manufacturing sector and among our customer base and ensure that steel remains the backbone of the American economy.”
