Rippey Awarded Gary Memorial Medal

CHICAGO – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced yesterday that Mike Rippey, chairman, ArcelorMittal USA, is the 2015 recipient of the Gary Memorial Medal—the industry’s highest honor. Rippey, the Institute’s immediate past chairman, was recognized with the award during AISI’s 123rd General Meeting in Chicago.

In presenting the award, Chuck Schmitt, incoming AISI chairman and president, SSAB Americas said, “On behalf of the Institute, I’m honored to present the Gary Memorial Medal to Mike. In his role as chairman of AISI and executive at ArcelorMittal USA, Mike has been a strong voice for the U.S. steel industry and manufacturing sector.”

The medal’s inscription reads: “For his dedication to our industry, his exceptional leadership, and for his steadfast resolve to ensure the next generation of steels, made in North America, continue to dominate as the material of choice for generations to come.”

Rippey served as chairman of the AISI Board of Directors from May 2014-May 2015 and chaired a number of board-level committees. He was elected to the AISI Board of Directors in November 2011. Rippey joined then-Mittal Steel USA as president and chief executive officer in 2006.

In addition, Larry Wolfe, technical marketing manager - steel industry at Carmeuse Lime & Stone, was named Associate Member of the Year, for his dedication to the U.S. steel industry and tireless advocacy as an AISI associate member.

The plaque inscription reads: “The American Iron and Steel Institute, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the membership, is pleased to award this citation for Associate Member of the Year to Larry Wolfe of Carmeuse Lime & Stone for his commitment to the engagement of the steel industry in grassroots advocacy with policymakers, and his dedication to growing the AISI Associate Member program.”
