WASHINGTON, D.C. –The American Iron and Steel Institute, which represents North American steel producers and suppliers of the industry, commended the U.S. House of Representatives today for passing H.R. 3 by a vote of 266-153 to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

“The House has shown real leadership their first week in session by passing Keystone XL legislation,” said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of the AISI. “Ensuring a robust energy infrastructure is critical for domestic economic growth and job creation, and is essential to the international competitiveness of American manufacturing – particularly in energy-intensive industries like steel.

“Pipelines have long been recognized as one of the safest, most reliable and well- regulated ways to move crude oil and petroleum products. The Keystone XL pipeline will create over 42,000 jobs and provide $2 billion in economic growth. Passing Keystone XL is a win-win, especially after so many years of bureaucratic hurdles, and we urge the Senate to show the same support in coming weeks,” concluded Gibson.
