Worldfund presented Johannpeter with the 2013 Education Leadership Award at the organization’s annual gala on June 5.

The award recognizes Johannpeter for his support of initiatives that improve the quality of education in Brazil, such as the Education for All Movement, Young Scientist Award, and Junior Achievement, among many others. In 2012, the company invested more than $24 million in more than 900 social projects in the 13 countries where Gerdau operates. Gerdau focuses its social responsibility efforts in the areas of education, quality management and community support.

“The quality of a society is directly proportional to the quality of the individuals that make up that society,” said Johannpeter. “Those who have received a high-quality education will certainly have greater opportunities in life, exercise their choices more responsibly, and make important contributions to improving the society in which they live.”

The purpose of the Education Leadership award is to highlight and applaud a corporation or individual that has demonstrated a strong commitment to education in Latin America.  Worldfund typically bestows the Education Leadership Award on both a Latin American and U.S.-based corporation to drive home the point that individuals and corporations throughout the Americas have a common interest in improving education levels in Latin America.

Founded in the U.S. in 2002, Worldfund is an institution that seeks to promote the training and improvement of working conditions of teachers and school educators in Latin America. Among the personalities honored by Worldfund in previous years are: Carlos Slim (Telmex), Roberto Civita (Abril Group), Jim O'Neill (Goldman Sachs Asset Management) and Muhtar Kent (The Coca-Cola Company).
