Steel Joist Institute Presents Webinar Featuring Dr. Thomas M. Murray

FLORENCE, SC., March 27, 2014 – The Steel Joist Institute announced the presentation of upcoming April and May webinars, titled “Vibration Analysis of Steel Joist Concrete Floor Systems” that will feature special guest speaker and expert in structural steel design and floor vibration analysis, Dr. Thomas M. Murray. The webinars will cover information contained in the soon-to-be updated SJI “Technical Digest No 5 Vibration Analysis of Steel Joist Concrete Floor Systems.”

During the presentation, Murray will offer suggested procedures and criteria for determining the adequacy of steel joist concrete floors subjected to human movement; a result of research conducted over the last 20 years and verified using an extensive database of tested steel joist supported concrete floors. In addition, Murray will review a detailed example showing how one can determine in the design phase the predicted vibrational properties of a steel joist supported concrete floor system; discuss software available to facilitate vibration calculations of steel joist supported concrete floor systems; and give remedial methods for improving lively floors utilizing structural and non-structural solutions.

The webinars will be held on Wednesday, April 16 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. (EST) and Wednesday, May 21 from 3:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. (EST). Individual and site registration for the April webinar is available at http://steeljoist.org/aprwebinar. Individual registration cost is $50.00 and each person who registers will receive his or her own link to the webinar and earn 0.15 CEUs, 1.5 PDHs or 1.5 LUs. Site registration also is available for $200.00, allowing multiple attendees from the same company to utilize one link to the webinar. Registration for the May webinar is available at http://steeljoist.org/maywebinar.

Murray is Emeritus Professor of Structural Steel Design at Virginia Tech and is co-author with Dr. Brad Davis, University of Kentucky, of SJI’s “Technical Digest No 5 Vibration Analysis of Steel Joist Concrete Floor Systems.” He has published many papers on the subject of floor vibrations and has presented seminars on the subject in numerous countries. Murray is a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Iron and Steel Institute specification committees, as well as, the AISC Committee on Manuals and Textbooks. He is a graduate of Iowa State University, Lehigh University and the University of Kansas, where he received his PhD.

Besides setting standards for the steel joist industry, the Steel Joist Institute works closely with major building code bodies throughout the country helping to develop code regulations regarding steel joists and Joist Girders. The Institute also invests thousands of dollars in research related to steel joists and Joist Girders and offers a complete library of publications and other training and research aids.
