SMDI Seeks R&D Proposals to Develop Steels for Future Manufacture of Pipes and Tubes for Natural Gas Industry

WASHINGTON, DC, June 18, 2013 – The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), is seeking R&D proposals for research to identify steels used in the manufacture of pipes and tubes with properties expected to be needed by 2025 for gathering and transporting natural gas, as well as the processes needed to produce those steels. The research is in response to new technologies being used by the natural gas industry to recover new reserves with different environments, which demands increased properties in the steels that can be used. Line pipes of all diameters will be considered, including U/O, electric-resistance welded (ERW), and spirally welded.

Multiple proposals may be submitted. For more information and submission guidelines, view the Request for Proposal. Proposals may be submitted electronically in Word format to manufacturingt@steel.org and are due by August 30, 2013.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 24 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 125 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI’s member companies represent over three-quarters of both U.S. and North American steel capacity.

SMDI grows and maintains the use of steel through strategies that promote cost-effective solutions in the automotive, construction and container markets, as well as for new growth opportunities in emerging steel markets.
