SMDI President Lawrence Kavanagh to Speak at SteelDay Event

WASHINGTON, DC, September 21, 2011 - Lawrence Kavanagh, president of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), will address participants at a transportation networking event to commemorate SteelDay® that will take place on Thursday, September 22, 2011, beginning at 11 a.m. at the U.S. Department of Transportation in Washington DC.

This event is an opportunity to engage U.S. legislators and decision-makers involved in job creation, education, and transportation in a discussion on steel’s critical contributions to the U.S. infrastructure and global competitiveness.

Kavanagh will provide remarks on steel bridge innovations that can help the United States meet its transportation infrastructure challenges. Bridge repair and replacement are among the most urgent needs. SMDI’s Steel Bridge Task Force partners with other industry organizations to conduct research that establishes safe, cost-effective steel bridges and to provide owners, designers and engineers with accelerated bridge design and construction aids.

SteelDay® was established by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) three years ago to provide an opportunity for customers and the general public to see the workings of the industry first-hand. This year’s nationwide event will be held on September 23, 2011. For more information, please visit www.SteelDay.org.
