David C. Jeanes, P.E. Recognized with Outstanding Civil Engineering Alumni Award

WASHINGTON, D.C, Nov. 8, 2010 – Investor company members of the Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) congratulate David C. Jeanes, P.E., for his selection as a recipient of the first annual University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Engineering Outstanding Senior Alumni Award. Recipients of this award have brought recognition and honor to the College of Engineering through their professional achievements, leadership and service to the profession, university and society. The presentation was made at the Outstanding Alumni Awards Luncheon on October 16, 2010.

Jeanes served as the first president of SMDI until his retirement in March 2010. He received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1973.

“We congratulate Dave on this special recognition from his alma mater,” Lawrence W. Kavanagh, president of the Steel Market Development Institute, said. “He has profoundly impacted our industry, and I know he is pleased to be honored by the University of Massachusetts Amherst for this first-ever award.”

Jeanes retired from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) after 34 years of service. He joined the Institute in 1976 as a codes and standards engineer. He held positions as senior engineer; research associate at the National Bureau of Standards (now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST) where he led the structural fire endurance  research program; manager of engineering operations; director of construction codes and standards; and senior vice president of market development. In 2008, he became president of the newly-launched Steel Market Development Institute.

He was instrumental in the establishment of work plans leading to the formation of the Steel Framing Alliance, the Metal Roofing Alliance, the National Steel Bridge Alliance, the Auto/Steel Partnership, the Canned Food Alliance, and the Steel Recycling Institute. He has served on the boards of directors of the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Steel Construction Roundtable, the National Steel Bridge Alliance, and the Steel Recycling Institute. Jeanes is a licensed Professional Engineer and a decorated Vietnam veteran.

In May 2010, Jeanes received the Market Development Lifetime Achievement Award at AISI’s annual General Meeting. The award recognizes steel industry professionals who have made significant contributions over the course of their careers to advancing the use of steel in various applications. These contributions particularly include influencing the strategic direction of SMDI’s programs.
