Statement by Thomas J. Gibson, President and CEO, American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI)

America’s steel industry is encouraged by U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk’s remarks today and the new emphasis on taking proactive steps to enforce trade rules already on the books and to continue to use available trade remedies to correct market distortions that artificially tilt the playing field against American manufacturers.

We commend Ambassador Kirk for his leadership in filing a suit last month at the World Trade Organization against China for unfairly restricting exports of raw materials, restrictions that keep the prices of these products lower for Chinese producers than the global market price, giving Chinese industries an unfair competitive advantage.

We support his stated commitment to emphasize vigorous oversight in our trade relations, including consistent monitoring of our partners’ trade practices, and willingness to take things to the next step if acceptable solutions are not achieved.   We look forward to working with Ambassador Kirk on these important actions to support American manufacturers who are vital to the nation’s economic recovery and long-term vitality.
