Steel Industry Names J. James Kutka, Jr. of United States Steel Corporation as Recipient of Market Development Achievement Award

PHOENIX, May 5, 2009- AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) announced today that J. James Kutka, Jr., senior vice president-strategic planning and business development of United States Steel Corporation (retired), is the recipient of the 2009 Market Development Achievement Award. The award recognizes the service of individuals within the North American steel industry who have made significant contributions in advancing the competitive use of steel in the marketplace. The award was presented by AISI Chairman James L. Wainscott, chairman, president and CEO of AK Steel Corporation, during a ceremony held at AISI’s 117th General Meeting.

“This award is given to steel industry professionals who have gone the extra mile to make steel the material of choice in the marketplace,” David C. Jeanes, P.E., president of AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute, said. “Their contributions typically span several years and provide a ripple effect for years to come.

“Jim Kutka is one of those individuals whose efforts will have a long-term impact,” Jeanes said. “For more than three years, Jim provided outstanding leadership as chairman of AISI’s Market Development Committee. In September 2008, he helped us make the transition to the Steel Market Development Institute, a business unit of AISI, and served as the first chairman of the board. Our organization is stronger now and will be for the future because of the direction and leadership that he provided over the years to the steel industry’s market development program.” 

The award inscription reads: "Presented to J. JAMES KUTKA, JR. in recognition of your leadership of the AISI Market Development program and the establishment of the Steel Market Development Institute.”

Kutka began his U. S. Steel career in 1967 as a production worker at the company’s former Canton Roll & Machine Works. After earning a degree in accounting from the University of Akron in 1970, he joined the accounting staff at the Canton Works and later held accounting posts at the former Lorain-Cuyahoga Works, the Haverhill chemicals plant, Gary Works and Pittsburgh headquarters.

He served as general manager of southern area purchasing in Houston; manager of business planning at the Geneva-Pittsburg Works in Provo, Utah; and district sales manager for U.S. Steel in Detroit. He returned to Pittsburgh in 1993 as general manager of human resources. He subsequently became general manager of business process reengineering and general manager of marketing and planning for sheet products before returning to the Detroit area in 1997 as general manager-automotive.

In 2001, Kutka returned to Pittsburgh as vice-president commercial and assumed the additional role of president-United States Steel International, Inc. in 2002. In 2005, he was appointed senior vice president-commercial; and in 2008, was named senior vice president-sales and customer service. He later became senior vice president-strategic planning and business development. He retired from United States Steel Corporation on April 1, 2009.
