Brian Aranha of ArcelorMittal Recieves Steel Industry Recognition Award for Leadership

PHOENIX, May 5, 2009 - AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) recognized Brian Aranha, Chief Marketing Officer, Industry, ArcelorMittal Flat Carbon Europe, for his outstanding leadership as chairman of the Automotive Applications Council from 2004 to 2009. The award presentation was made today by AISI Chairman James L. Wainscott, chairman, president and CEO of AK Steel Corporation, during a ceremony held at AISI’s 117th General Meeting.

“Under Brian’s leadership, the Automotive Applications program partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct research for lightweighting and enabler projects that provided mass reduction for more efficient automotive design,” Ron Krupitzer, AISI Steel Market Development Institute vice president of automotive applications, said. “Advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades are now the fastest-growing material in today’s vehicles. During that timeframe, the Tailored Steel Product Alliance was formed, and Great Designs in Steel grew into the premiere technology transfer forum for AHSS. We appreciate the guidance and leadership that Brian provided while chairman of the Automotive Applications Council.” 

Aranha joined Dofasco Inc. in 1979 as a member of the company’s Research and Development Department. In 1989, he served as a Research Fellow on AISI’s Committee on Technology in Washington DC, and in 1991 was part of a Canadian consortium conducting a study for the World Bank on restructuring the Polish steel industry. Aranha was Dofasco Inc.’s project manager, delivery improvement team; general manager, quality systems; assistant director of and director of automotive business. He became vice president-commercial for Dofasco in 2003. Aranha was named chief marketing officer, industry, ArcelorMittal Flat Carbon Europe in October 2008, and is now stationed in Luxembourg.
