AISI Publishes Design Guide for Cold-Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 4, 2009   – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced today the publication of the 2009 edition of the Design Guide for Cold-Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems. The Design Guide is based on AISI S100-07, the 2007 edition of the North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members. It is available for purchase online at www.steel.org.

The guide will benefit designers of single span and continuous multiple span steel purlin-supported roof systems. It provides a comprehensive review of C- or Z-purlin supported cold-formed steel purlin roof framing systems with emphasis on the design of anchorage. It was developed by AISI’s Committee on Specifications for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members and the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA).

The Design Guide for Cold-Formed Steel Purlin Roof Framing Systems has information on:

  • Design Methods for Purlins - Contains an overview of design methods for cold-formed purlin-supported roof systems.
  • Continuous Purlin Design - Contains discussion on the design of continuous purlin lines, along with ASD and LRFD example calculations.
  • System Anchorage Requirements - Contains information on system anchorage requirements in the Specification and simplified and matrix-based solutions, and provides an extensive set of ASD and LRFD examples.
  • Alternate Analysis Procedures - The methods examined include component stiffness method, frame element stiffness modeling, and finite element modeling for analyzing complex anchorage systems.
