AISI Brochure Reveals that Styled Steel Wheels Offer Higher Profit

DETROIT, MI, July 10, 2002 - A new eight-page brochure from American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) answers several important questions about wheels, such as: What do consumers want and expect in passenger car and light truck wheels? What can the auto industry do about these consumer expectations? What are the benefits to automotive manufacturers? What are consumer perceptions about wheels relative to safety, weight and cost?

The 15-member Wheels Task Force of AISI, whose members represent automakers, steel makers, and wheel makers, commissioned one of North America's leading opinion research organizations, Burke Marketing Research, to study consumer preferences with regard to the wheels on new cars, SUVs, and light trucks. The findings of this study are revealing:

  • Consumers consider steel wheels to be safer than aluminum wheels.

  • Consumers surveyed perceive steel wheels as stronger and more durable than aluminum wheels.

  • Consumers are notably likely to pay more for styled steel wheels than aluminum wheels

  • Consumers associate lower cost with aluminum wheels.
