The National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program is the result of a two-year collaborative effort involving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Automotive Recyclers Association, the Ecology Center (Ann Arbor), representatives of the Environmental Council of the States, Environmental Defense, End of Life Vehicle Solutions, Inc., the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries and the Steel Manufacturers Association.  This program is designed to remove mercury-containing switches from scrap (or retired) vehicles before mercury emissions contaminate the auto-scrap recycling infrastructure.
