Shipbuilding
AISI’s Shipbuilding Market
Task Group was formed in 1995 to identify mutual areas of opportunity
for the steel and shipbuilding industries to make the U.S. more
competitive in the commercial shipbuilding marketplace.
The Shipbuilding Market Task Group commissioned the University of
Michigan's Transportation Research Institute, Marine Systems Division,
to prepare a report on world-class shipbuilding steel design,
procurement, and production best practices. The report provided a
worldwide summary of shipbuilding and steel industry practices to
identify potential areas of joint research.
The Shipbuilding Market Task Group completed its work in 1999.

Report on World-Class Shipbuilding Steel Design,
Procurement and Production Best Practices
The report provides a summary of worldwide shipbuilding and
steel industry practices to form a basis for identifying potential areas
of joint research that would result in U.S. shipbuilders becoming
internationally competitive. The report was prepared as part of a study
funded by AISI’s Shipbuilding Market Task Group. It is based on
information gathered through interviews, visits and meetings between
U.S. steel industry and shipbuilding industry representatives. Prepared
for AISI by H.B. Bongiorni, Associate Research Scientist, and T. Lamb,
Senior Research Scientist. (March 25, 1998)
