Pipes and Tanks
AVAILABLE ONLINE!
AISI is proud to announce the Welded Steel Pipe Revised
Edition for 2007, which offers a compilation of useful information
for the design of water transmission lines and distribution systems
using welded steel pipe. Written by the American Iron and Steel
Institute (AISI) in cooperation with the Steel Tank Institute/Steel
Plate Fabricators Association (STI/SPFA), the Welded Steel Pipe
Revised Edition for 2007 is now available for free download at the
AISI website. Click

More than 135 years ago, the first steel pipe ever laid in
America began supplying water to the population of San Francisco. This
five-mile long conduit—unlined, uncoated and unwrapped—was
the first of millions of miles of pipe and millions of tons of steel
used to create the infrastructure of America’s water, chemical and
petrochemical distribution and transmission infrastructure.
As a testament to steel's durability, this pipe is still in service
today. With considerable and ongoing improvements in the quality of mill
steel, fabrication technology, welding, linings, coatings, and cathodic
protection, the combination of steel's strength, performance, and
durability remains unparalleled.
AISI is working with its partners to grow the
market for steel water distribution pipe and corrugated steel pipe.
Steel also makes sense as the material of choice for above- ground
water storage tanks. Steel's unmatched historic performance is clearly
demonstrated by membership in the Century Club, whose water storage tank
members have each provided over 100 years of faithful service to owners
and local residents.
As with water storage tanks, steel fuel storage tanks (both
above-ground and below-ground) have lower initial and life cycle costs
than other materials, meet zero leakage tolerance standards, are safe in
the face of extreme weather conditions or natural disasters (including
earthquakes, tornados, mud slides and extreme temperature changes), and
are recyclable. They also exceed current Environmental Protection Agency
Standards.
