Sustainability

EarthConstruction project designers are increasingly concerned with the impact of their work on energy and the environment, especially as certain aspects of construction and building envelope design are becoming mandated by government codes, such as the California Title 24 Energy Code. In addition, change is being promoted through voluntary green building guidelines, like LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), as promulgated by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This emphasis on sustainable building design presents growth opportunities for steel construction products.

AISI and its partners in the steel construction industry are providing instruction for builders on the environmental benefits of framing with steel and cool metal roofing at venues such as the USGBC Greenbuild Conference and Exposition and also the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) Ecobuild Conference and Exposition.

Cool metal roofs can have the greatest impact on the energy use of a building.

Steel Industry Unites to Promote Sustainability Benefits of Steel
09/22/2005- The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) will represent steel as the “green” builder’s choice at the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Atlanta, Georgia on November 9-11, 2005.

Cool Metal Roofing
Buildings consume one-third of all energy and two-thirds of all electricity generated. Cool roofs can help reduce energy consumption by lowering cooling loads. In fact, reflective roofs directly save up to 40% in heating and cooling energy costs.

Cool Facts About Cool Metal Roofing
Architects are becoming increasingly aware of metal roofing as a “green” building product. Metal roofing is recognized for its durability, recyclability, recycled content and low weight, among other benefits.

Steel Takes LEED With Recycled Content
Steel’s high recycled content and high reclamation rate make it an ideal building material, meeting criteria established by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) rating system.
