 Steel pails and 55-gallon drums are valued by packagers and
shippers for their strength, light weight, versatility, recyclability,
and tamper- and flame-resistance.
An important focus for AISI in this market is on monitoring codes and
standards. Along with several strategic partners, AISI conducted fire
tests on 55-gallon drums. The test results were presented to the
National Fire Protection Agency, which reviewed them and subsequently
approved an amendment to NFPA 30 (the flammable and combustible liquids
code) allowing steel drums filled with flammable and combustible liquids
fitted with relieving style plugs to be stacked four high in storage
warehouses with foam-water fire suppression systems.
This means that warehouse storage space for these steel containers
can double while managing the fire hazards associated with storage of
hazardous materials, resulting in cost and safety efficiencies for steel
customers.
