Exceptional Versatility for General Line Container Applications
- The variety of steel and shapes and sizes provides the right package
for thousands of nonfood products ranging from paint cans to shoe
polish, waxes, aerosol sprays, finishes and lighter fluids.
- Aerosols are the package for more than 1,500 different products
ranging from lubricants, paints and finishes to personal, medical and
household products.
- A fire extinguishes itself within 22 minutes without activating the
sprinkler system in tests conducted by Southwest Research Institute in
conjunction with Hughes Associates with support from American Iron and
Steel Institute. The tests used a pallet of one-gallon steel containers
of paint thinner. Although some plastic caps melted during the tests,
all 180 steel container remained intact, and no product contributed to
the fire.
- In tests of plastic containers flames nearly reached ceiling height
in less than two minutes. Leaking paint thinner creates a pool fire 12
feet in diameter. Sprinklers ultimately control the fire, but not before
the water spreads it to the edges of the building.

Packaging steels have become indispensable for containing paints,
solvents and other flammable and combustible products used by
consumers and industries. The variety of steel can shapes and sizes
provides the right package for thousands of nonfood products ranging
from paint cans to shoe polish, waxes, aerosol sprays, finishes and
lighter fluids.
Aerosol Cans Deliver Safety and Convenience
Only the aerosol can provides the variation of propellant pressure
and the range of spray patterns and particle sizes that make a multitude
of products possible for industrial and consumer use. More than 90
percent of all aerosol cans are made from steel and are completely
recyclable when empty after normal use. Aerosols are the package for
more than 1,500 different products ranging from lubricants, paints and
finishes to personal, medical and household products.
Because the aerosol can is hermetically sealed, its products won't
leak, spill or evaporate. Packages are tamper-resistant, and product
shelf life is extended. Many medical and convenience products, such as
asthma inhalers and shaving cream, are available to consumers only
through aerosol packaging. Controlled dispensing, premixed contents and
convenience add up to efficient use of cost-effective products packaged
in steel aerosol cans.
It is a myth that aerosol products are harmful to the environment.
Since 1978, virtually all aerosol products - 98 percent of those made
and sold in the United States - have not contained chlorofluorocarbons
(CFCs) as a propellant. The less than 2 percent of total aerosol
products made in the U.S. that do contain some level of CFCs are
primarily medical and pharmaceutical items and are classified as
essential products by the U.S. government.
The Safe Package for Flammable Liquids
Manufacturers of paint and other flammable/combustible products
choose steel for strength, durability an stackability in warehouses, and
because they look great on retail shelves. More importantly, they select
steel containers for fire safety. In the event of a fire, the qualities
of steel containers are unmatched in protecting against product loss,
damage and possibly higher insurance costs. According to a recent study
conducted by fire safety experts at Schirmer Engineering Corporation,
steel containers have been proven to be significantly more fire-
resistant than plastic containers in numerous fire tests conducted
during the past decade. Packaging in steel containers means reduced pool
fires, less seepage of contaminant into the ground and fewer problems
with insurance underwriters and fire marshals in a fire situation.
