The Gulf Coast Steel Initiative

The Gulf Coast Steel Initiative was started by a group of  North American steel companies that joined together to help rebuild the U.S. Gulf Coast region in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The group has collectively committed $1.1 million to support a business plan put together by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) to “rebuild stronger with steel” a region subject to severe storms.

The Gulf Coast Steel Initiative will focus on implementing long-term initiatives to help change future construction practices in this region. These initiatives center on the residential market (framing and roofing) and recycling.

What’s unique about this initiative?

  • It is a collective effort of 12 North American steel companies.
  • It draws on years of industry expertise in Market Development through AISI.
  • It’s a $1.1 million initiative. This is in addition to more than $7 million already contributed to the Gulf Coast disaster relief efforts by North American steel companies.
  • It involves partnerships with local government disaster relief efforts.
  • It focuses on rebuilding communities and businesses by training skilled framers to use light-gauge steel framing for homes and roofing.
  • It relies on local contractors and technical schools to train these workers, helping local businesses to rebuild.
  • It focuses on training for building inspectors, which will provide additional workers to the region while streamlining costs.
  • It contributes to the clean-up efforts by facilitating steel product recycling throughout the region.
  • It will establish higher-performance construction criteria by promoting  state building codes that define state-of-the-art practices for hurricane-prone areas.
